Hello to Week 11! This semester has been so amazing and its almost finished! I don't think I have told you yet but the foreign language that I am learning is American Sign Language (ASL). ASL is definitely a challenge but it extremely beneficial with the major I have. One assignment that i just completed was my "Deaf World Presentation," where I learned about how Deaf People are oppressed and how the Deaf community shows resistance. I looked at the Hollywood industry and noticed that Deaf people are shown as much as they should. I was extremely nervous to give the presentation because I have to sign the whole time... 4-5 minutes! But, my professor was very understanding and helped me prepare. Out of the presentation... I learned one very important thing... No one should be oppressed. Especially, don't oppress Deaf people for something they are happy about. It is not a disability but a gain. The Deaf community calls it... "Deaf Gains." Also, if anyone is Deaf or knows ASL, don't be afraid to come talk to me and i'll do the same!
